What is Rent-A-Rabbit?

Have you always wanted an angora rabbit but were not sure about taking the leap? Have you always wanted to learn how to spin and crochet and make your own handmade winter wear? This is the best of both worlds. Now you can rent an exotic angora rabbit and come visit it quarterly at Keshini Fiber Farm in upstate NY in the Catskills. You'll learn the whole process from fiber to finished garment over the course of a year by joining other like minded folks every three months for workshops, and the following winter your very own rabbit's fiber will be keeping you, or loved ones super warm.

The workshop includes renting your very own rabbit and using its fiber for one year. There will be four quarterly workshops. Each workshop will feature two sessions and will include locally sourced meals and an overnight stay at Keshini Fiber Farm. Course Description:
Workshop 1: October 12 & 13, 2013
Animal Husbandry

This first workshop will be dedicated to getting to know your rabbit. You will learn the basics of how to hold and brush it, as this will be YOUR rabbit for the entire year. There will be a demonstration and some history of the Angora rabbit and why their fiber is one of the softest and warmest in the world. There will then be a dinner made with organic and local food and a bonfire, if the weather cooperates. The following morning we will give the rabbits their first shearing. Then there will be a local lunch.

Workshop 2: January 11 & 12, 2014
Processing Your Fiber Into Yarn

The second weekend workshop will be dedicated to fiber processing. We will start with shearing your rabbit and then a nice local dinner and movie/fiber activities. In the morning we will learn how to card the previous two hair cuts worth of fiber and then will have a spinning lesson on drop spindles and a viewing of how spinning is done on a spinning wheel. Then there will be a local lunch again to end the workshop.

Workshop 3: April 12 & 13, 2014
Crocheting With Your Yarn

This third weekend workshop will be dedicated to learning how to create something with your yarn. We will once again start with shearing your rabbit and then a nice local dinner and movie/fiber activities. In the morning there will be crochet classes offered, or if you already know how to crochet this will be a time to get help with pattern ideas and to begin working on your product. This can be anything from spinning your latest fibers to knitting/crocheting to having a go on the spinning wheel. Then there will be a local lunch to end the workshop.

Workshop 4: July 12 & 13, 2013
Dying Your Finished Product

The fourth weekend workshop will be dedicated to learning how to naturally dye your designs and fiber. We will once again start with shearing your rabbit and then a nice local dinner and movie or fiber activities. In the morning there will be a dying class where we will forage for local plants to dye with, cook them on an outside stove and dye our products and fiber. We will finish with a local lunch.

The price for the workshop is $1600 ($400 quarterly).
The deposit is $220. The balance of $1,380 is due two weeks before arrival. If you need to set up a payment plan, that can be arranged.

Keshini fiber farm has the right to cancel if less than six students sign up.
